About
I am one of twelve U.S. arts journalists selected as a 2009 NEA International Arts Journalism Fellow and a 2007 Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Recipient. I’ve written and published two art books, sixteen exhibition catalogs, fifty-seven magazine articles, and nearly 200 online stories. Additionally, I won awards for my writing from Top of the Rockies Excellence in Journalism. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature/Creative Writing from the University of Texas, San Antonio.
When writing about art and artists, my goal is to reflect on the myriad ways creativity is expressed and to convey the soul of the artist in a way that is accessible to the reader yet challenges them. Writing about art completes the artistic process by providing an intelligent viewer reaction. Artists create art to be viewed and express something within them; viewers see the work from their point of view, and the two are rarely the same. I strive to write informed observations that are more than opinions.
And then I quit. I gave it up. I stopped writing about art. I stopped writing. That’s not completely true; I wrote a few pieces here and there. I was spending more money traveling to write about art than I earned. I figured if I didn’t make money, I might as well write whatever I wanted. The thing is, I didn’t do that. I immersed myself in managing Lantern Dancer and working with Native American artists, and continuing the success of my friend and mentor, Doris Green. It was her business, but she turned it over to me to run, and it was a wild ride filled with ups and downs. For a time, I thought I would buy the business from her and keep running it. However, things changed, and in 2021, I relocated to Montrose, CO, to finally get back to my writing.
Here I am. Welcome to my new website/blog.
